The 100th Anniversary of the Art of Noises
March 11th 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of a revolutionary manifesto that changed the way we think about sound and music.
Summary: On March 11th 2013, The Neo Futurist Collective and their partners will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Art of Noises manifesto by futurist artist Luigi Russolo through a guerrilla performance on the streets of London at 7.30pm GMT and the release of a long-lost historic recording. Joseph Young of the collective will also be writing articles as a guest blogger on the World Listening Project web site (http://www.worldlisteningproject.org) and making an hour-long radio feature for Resonance FM (http://www.frameworkradio.net) for broadcast in April.
Background: “We must enlarge and enrich more and more the domain of musical sounds. … This need and this tendency can be totally realized only through the joining and substituting of noises to and for musical sounds.“ (Russolo 1913, translated by Robert Filliou, 1967)
With this manifesto and the concerts that followed, Russolo, an Italian painter, opened our ears to the use of noise and the clamour of modern life as musical material. Without him the entire history of 20th century music might have taken a different course. But in the 21st century Russolo’s contribution to the development of sound art, field recording and experimental music, is largely unrecognised outside of specialist circles. However, when the manifesto was published and the performances of Russolo’s intonarumori (noise instruments) were premiered the following year they were accompanied by packed houses, riots and front-page headlines all over Europe. The London Coliseum (then a variety theatre) was sold out for a week and The Times reported rioting in the streets outside in response to the cacophony indoors.
Discovery: On March 11th we will be releasing to the world a recently uncovered recording of what appears to be Luigi Russolo declaiming a short section of his own manifesto. This potentially historically important recording is particularly poignant because most of Russolo’s instruments and scores were destroyed or lost during the intervening two world wars. All that is left is the opening 7 bars of the score to his noise symphony “Awakening of a City”.
Action: In a central London location (whereabouts to be announced on the day at 5pm GMT) The Neo Futurist Collective and Fruit for the Apocalypse will perform “Cartet” – a Quartet for Car Engines, Horns and Radios in homage to Russolo’s call for the celebration of urban noise. The performance will take the form of a flashmob in a well-known public space. On the same day, Professor Russolo and his Noise Intoners will perform a noisy bicycle ride through the streets of Amsterdam.
