Soundman and Ableton – Berlin

A quick report on two meetings in the past week with tech companies based here in Berlin. I’ve been using their kit for a long time in both cases and it was a pleasure and a privilege to meet them to discuss my practice and how I creatively work with their products.

The Ableton Live team came to see the show at Errant Bodies, in which I performed with my custom-designed Sonic Baton designed and built for me by Mike Blow and were eager to find out more about the technology behind it and how it helps to bring sound art alive for an audience. I recorded a short performance for them in their studio base in Mitte.

Soundman OKMII have been my binaural mic of choice since I began recording, capturing high quality binaural sound at a compelling price point. It was great to spend a couple of hours with their inventor Rolf in his Berlin flat, which is also Soundman HQ,  and to talk about the challenges facing artists in the current climate (as well as picking up a few useful technical tips). Rolf is pictured above posing beside his dummy head, John.

I hope to continue the dialogue with both companies in the future…
